ISO 45001 logo

ISO 45001 is the international standard for occupational health and safety management systems (OHSMS), created to improve global workplace health and safety performance. It helps organizations prevent and control risks that can cause injury and ill health. It replaced OHSAS 18001 with ISO 45001:2018; organizations certified to OHSAS 18001 were required to complete transition within three years from 12 March 2018.

Differences Between OHSAS 18001 and ISO 45001

  • Application of the High Level Structure (HLS)
  • Stronger emphasis on management participation and consultation
  • Requirements covering workers beyond direct employees
  • Addition of risks and opportunities related to the management system and OHS

Benefits of ISO 45001

  • Enhance competitiveness and export opportunities through international trust
  • Establish systematic processes that address legal requirements and incident prevention
  • Reduce injury rates and lost-time incidents by managing workplace risks
  • Lower insurance and direct/indirect costs through an OHSMS
  • Improve transparency in safety processes and support stable labor relations
